How this calculator works

What is a FIRE number?

The portfolio size where a safe withdrawal covers your spending. At a 4% withdrawal rate it is 25 times your annual spending. At 3.5% it is about 28.6 times.

Why real returns?

Your expected return minus inflation is what your money actually grows by in purchasing power. Using it keeps the FIRE number in today's dollars so you can compare it to your spending today.

What is Coast FIRE?

The amount that, invested today and left alone, grows to your FIRE number by age 65 without another contribution. Once you pass it you only need to earn enough to cover current expenses.

Where does dividend income fit?

If your portfolio yield at FIRE meets or beats your withdrawal rate, you can live on dividends without selling shares. The calculator shows how much of your spending dividends would cover at the yield you enter.
